zermatt. spatial sound design for VR swing-experience

may 2023, for hybrid reality research, adam kyrik & adi grüninger, chair of architecture & art of prof. karin sander, D-ARCH, ETH zurich.

in collaboration with ETH AI center, AI+art curator Adrian notz // swiss korean innovation week special exhibition by seoul design foundation & embassy of switzerland in the republic of korea

einstein is a spatial composition for an ar-experience. visitors could either put on a vr-headset or scan a qr-code with their phone, upon which the virtual bust of famous physicist einstein (which can be admired in real at eth hönggerberg) would appear in the middle of the area. virtual objects and relics from zurich, captured photogrammetrically by students, would then appear to orbit around the head. my sound design gave informations and instructions about the exhibition in english and korean.

I made use of AI generated translations & text-to-speech instructions in english and korean. the sound design is based on sound particle movements in virtual space, which gives a feeling of movement.

home office is a composition for two virtual home offices, that develops from ambience into music (0:55) from the sounds of the objects in the virtual rooms. the sound design is spatially coordinated with the virtual home offices. Depending on the office you see, your attention focuses on other sounds. audio perception is guided by the visual experience.

some words about 3d audio

the field of 3d sound production, including spatial and immersive sound experiences, has received great momentum in recent years due to technological advances and applications in digital space. but what is the difference between spatial and immersive? both give us a 3d feeling of sound. spatial sound refers to the perception of sound location and movement within a physical space, achieved through the use of multiple speakers strategically positioned around the listener or through a spatial binaural mix for headphones. immersive sound goes a step further by aiming to create a complete sensory experience. in my understanding, the sound doesn't necessarily have to be spatially arranged, but the person should feel as if taking a bath in the sound coming from all directions, either through sound sources or reflections.

a big dream came true after my maternity leave, when I realized, how much the field has advanced during my break. suddenly, object-based spatial mixes could be created and adapted to different applications and sound emitters within the programs. I listened to the first binaural spatial mixes and suddenly there appeared different new spatial formats for end-consumers on the market. the visit to deep space 8k in the ars electronica center linz in austria, where I had an immersive sound and visual experience for the first time, fueled my passion. I started working with my compositions and field recordings in virtual spatial sound and binaural spatial mixes. soon I had my first projects for augmented (ar) and virtual reality (vr) experiences in transdiciplinary teams of architects and vr-designers. currently I am working on an inclusive immersive sound installations for real spaces. what an incredible time to work with sound! let's see where the journey takes us.
